NOTES:

- Wireless routers straight out of the box are NOT secure, thus allowing anyone to use your WiFi access for potentially illegal activities.

- Get IP (internet protocol) address to access the router

    - Linksys: http://192.168.1.1/

    - D-Link: http://192.168.0.1/

    - Belkin: http://192.168.2.1/

- IP addresses straightly used by routers to access web configuration page

- Larger bit encryption = more difficult to break

- Save password in router and notebook computer

- WEP – very insecure compared to WPA

WEP – Wired Equivalent Privacy:

- Select the following:

  1. Home
  2. Wireless
  3. Security
  4. Choose WEP
  5. Choose-- either 64-Bit or 128-Bit encryption
    1. 64-Bit (10 Characters)
    2. 128-Bit (26 Characters)
  6. password = alpha-numerical hexadecimal

    Use characters 0-9 and A-F

  7. Click Apply

WPA – WiFi Protected Access:

- most new routers have WPA

- Select the following:

  1. Home
  2. Wireless
  3. Security
  4. Choose WPA
  5. Click Apply

Windows Wireless Access:

- View wireless internet connections

- Select by clicking the access point

- Click connect

- Dialog box – Enter network key

- Click connect

- WEP and WPA works with both Windows and Mac
