- Hard Drive Makeup:
- Clusters: areas on the hard drive that contain data.
- Sectors: smaller portions of clusters.
- Defragmenting a hard drive is organizing the data so the drive can be read faster and more efficiently.
- To access Windows Disk Defragmenter:
1) Click Start then All Programs
2) Go to Accessories
3) Go to System Tools and choose Disk Defragmenter

4) Click Analyze, based on your system's response you can determine whether to defragment.
5) Click Defragment if you decide to defragment your hard disk drive.
- Once every month, two-three months, or when your system has a serious performance slow down.
- Mac's don't have to be defragmented.

- A contiguous file is a file where all of the data appears in order in a single location on the hard drive.
- The recommended defragmenting software for Mac's is called iDefrag.
