- Out of the box, wireless routers have default settings that you can use to connect wirelessly...when applying new settings your wireless connection will be lost during the router reboot.

- Intel Centrino Notebooks automatically have built-in wireless connectivity

To Qualify as Centrino it must have Intel certified:

        - CPU

        - Wireless

        - Chipset

- Centrino components can be used with non-Centrino products, but the end result cannot be called Centrino

Keywords for Wireless:

      - WiFi

      - 802.11b:

        - first wireless technology

        - uses 2.4GHz spectrum

        - up to 11 mbps

        - backwards compatible with 802.11g (slower of the two will be your speed and range)

      - 802.11g:

        - uses 2.4GHz spectrum

        - up to 54 mbps

        - backwards compatible with 802.11b (slower of the two will be your speed and range)

      - 802.11a:

        - uses 5GHz spectrum

        - up to 54 mbps

        - not very widely used

        - typically only found at businesses

IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers:

    - Set specifications for electronics

    - 802.11 Standard

    - 802 Std Info

- The further away = decrease in speed

- At the furtherest point = still get 1 mbps

- Your transfer speed and range will drop significantly if there are walls, concrete, or mental in the way.

- These "doubling" speed technologies will only work if all wireless components use the same chipset.

- If your router has "Extreme" turned on, standard WiFi products may not be able to connect at all.

SSID - Service Set Identifier (name of your network)

Wardriving - is a technique hackers use to locate unsecured networks from the safety on their car.
